Kallie's Story...
December 8, 2014, was a typical cold winter’s day where kids were all excited because Christmas would be here soon. Sadly, Kallie got very sick on this day. Her parents thought she had the flu because she was nauseous and vomiting so badly. She looked so thin as she laid there with dark circles under her eyes. How could she get so sick in such a short time, they thought? She then became too weak to even wake up, and she was rushed into her doctor’s office where they sent her right to the hospital with blood sugar levels of 1200! It was discovered that Kallie had Type 1 Diabetes. That was one scary day for us all. We feared whether or not she would she be able to fight this with her blood sugar level already being so high? However, Kallie showed us that day how tough of a little girl she is. Here she was just turning 5 years old and her life would change forever! She's fought and fought and here she is today 8 years old.
She still fights through her hard to control highs and lows. The doctors and her parents, Timmy and Marianne, have a hard time keeping her steady most days not to mention all night! Yes, this is the life of a hard to control Type 1 diabetic. "No sleep" has become the new normal for them all. This is why her endocrinologist wanted her to have the Medtronic Insulin Pump, which is a pump that delivers precise amounts of insulin, along with a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) that allows them to see Kallie’s Blood sugar in real time. Now they have her on a waiting list for an artificial pancreas (670G PUMP). They needed to get another pump before this comes they are told, a step before the real deal. Insurance will not pay for any of this because they consider these pumps a luxury even though her doctors need her to have them because she is so hard to control. This is why her family and friends are planning on a fundraiser to help Kallie get the new pump she needs to give her and her parents piece of mind something they have been without since that day in December in 2014. Please join us to help bring this gift to one very deserving little girl. For monetary donations please visit any Midwest Bank Branch and make a donation under the name Kallie Strong Benefit. |
